What is Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is a short distance wireless communication technology that allows mobile phones, computers, and peripherals such as devices to transmit data or voice over short distances wirelessly.

The purpose of Bluetooth is to replace cables that normally connect devices, while still keeping communication between them and keeping them safe.

Bluetooth communicates with various electronic devices and manages the personal network operating within the 2.4 GHz band without a license. The operating range is based on the device class. All Bluetooth, including different types of digital devices such as MP3 players, mobile and peripheral devices, and personal computers use Bluetooth.

During the summer of 1997, Intel's Jim Kardach met Ericsson's Sven Mattisson for a drink in the local pub. When they were together, both began talking about history, and Matison brought a book "The Longships" with them, in which they learned about King Harrald. After this meeting, Kardach went home and received more information about King Bluetooth and how he was able to connect different parts of Scandinavia together and how to create a relationship between scattered groups.

When the title of "Bluetooth" was suggested in the Special Interest Group, then it was only as a placeholder. Of course, this word became so quick to hit, that the organization decided that they would not change it at all.

Today, the Bluetooth brand's global validation rate is 92%. This means that almost the entire world can recognize the Bluetooth logo. When it comes to great branding, there is no other company like Bluetooth.

Who is the founder of Bluetooth?

So who was the one who invented Bluetooth? The short answer is the Swedish telecommunications company, Ericsson.


We are all still using wireless communication, even if we do not always realize it. Radio receivers and television sets send air to air by broadcasting hundreds (possibly thousands) radio waves at a distance of km/mile.

Cordless telephones use similar techniques to carry calls from the handset to the base station somewhere in your house. If you use Wi-Fi (wireless internet), your computer sends and receives a steady stream of Internet data from a router that is probably wired directly from the net.

All these techniques involve sending information about the radio waves that are invisibly passing through the air, not with copper cables.

Bluetooth is a radio-wave technology similar to that, but it is designed primarily to communicate at a distance of fewer than 10 meters or 30 feet. Generally, you can use it to download a photo from a digital camera to a PC, to connect a wireless mouse on a laptop, to add a hands-free headset on your mobile phone so that you can talk safely at the same time and can drive, and expeditiously.

Electronic gadgets working in this way have built-in radio antennas (transmitters and receivers) so they can simultaneously send and receive wireless signals to other Bluetooth gadgets. Older gadgets that do not have Bluetooth features can be converted to work with Bluetooth using plug-in adapters (USB stick, PCMCIA laptop card, and so on).
The power of the transmitter controls the range at which a Bluetooth device can work and, generally, the devices are said to be in one of three sections: Class 1 is the most powerful and is 100 meters (330 feet), Class 2 (the most common type) is operated up to 10 meters (33 feet), and Class 3 is the least powerful and does not move beyond 1 meter (3.3 feet).

Classification of Bluetooth

Different types of Bluetooth technologies are available in the markets, which help users communicate wirelessly. Different types of Bluetooth devices are PC cards, radios, dongles, and headset. Laptops and other Internet-enabled devices use Bluetooth technology such as wireless mouse and keyboards for wireless communication. MP3 players like iPods, smartphones or other MP3 players use stereo headphones.

Uses of Bluetooth

The first and most important application of Bluetooth technology will be to eliminate the tinglings of those cables which will mess up the room.
1) The biggest contribution of Bluetooth is to provide with a phone with a headset that works wirelessly. This is possible by giving the caller a small microphone connected to the earpiece. A mobile phone can be located in a bag or anywhere in the body. The caller can dial a number without touching the mobile phone. The advantage of this technique is to eliminate radiation from the cerebral region.

2) PDAs, PCs or Laptops that have enabled Bluetooth can communicate with each other and can update with the latest information. This technique has helped to synchronize data easily.

3) It is difficult to send emails while travelling on the flight. On landing flight, Bluetooth enabled laptops can send emails only when it is in contact with the user's phone.

4) Wireless mouse and keyboard have Bluetooth.

5) When your laptop receives the mail, its mobile phone will be alerted.

6) You can try to locate a printer through a laptop. Once the printer is located, you will get the printout of that document.

How does Bluetooth work?


Bluetooth sends and receives radio waves in a band of 79 separate frequency (channels) focused on 2.45 GHz, is separate from radio, television, and mobile phones, and reserved for use by industrial, scientific and medical devices.

Do not worry: you are not going to interfere with someone's life-support machine using Bluetooth in your house, because the low power of your transmitters will not take away your signal! Bluetooth's short-range transmitter is one of its biggest plus points. They have virtually no power and because they do not travel far enough, theoretically more secure than those wireless networks that operate on long distances, such as Wi-Fi. (In practice, there are some safety concerns.)

Bluetooth devices automatically detect and connect with each other, and eight of them can communicate at any time. They do not interfere with each other because of the pair of each device uses one of the 79 different channels available. If two devices want to talk, they choose a channel randomly and, if it is already taken, then Randomly switches to one of the others (a technique called the spread-spectrum frequency hopping).

To reduce the risks of interference from other electrical appliances (and to improve safety), the pairs of instruments constantly change frequency, which occurs thousands of times in a second.

Is Bluetooth Better than Wifi or is it bad?

People often get confused with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi because, at first sight, they do the same things. In fact, they are very different. Bluetooth is used primarily to connect computers and electronic devices informally at very short distances. It is relatively safe, uses less power, connects automatically, and does not present very little or no health risk in principle.

Wi-Fi is designed to shuttle data in large amounts between computers and the Internet, which is often at a greater distance. It may involve more detailed protection and it generally uses high power, so arguably presents a little more health risk when used. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are complementary technologies, not rivals, and you can easily use both of your electronic gadgets to make it more convenient for you!

How Secure is Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is considered to be a fairly secure wireless technology when used with precautions. The connection is encrypted to prevent casual eavesdropping (to eavesdrop) from other nearby devices. Bluetooth devices also shift radio frequencies even when added, which prevents an easy attack.

Devices also offer different types of settings that allow users to limit Bluetooth connections. Device-level security for "trusting" a Bluetooth device, only restricts connections for that specific device to a connection. With service-level security settings, you can also restrict the type of activities that allow your device to attach to a Bluetooth connection.

However, with any wireless technology, there are always some security risks involved. Hackers have made several types of malicious attacks that use Bluetooth networking. For example, "Bluesnarfing" refers to a hacker authorized access to information on the device via Bluetooth; "Bluebugging" occurs when an attacker takes care of your mobile phone and all its functions.
