Storage devices are an important part of computer hardware. It is used to store all data on a computer. This device may temporarily or permanently store data. This device is either external or internal and again portable. This device is also network-connected again. Which we call server storage systems. These devices come in many forms, from the hard disk of the computer to the memory card of your smartphone, all of the storage devices.
We learned that storage devices are of different types. But the computer's operating system, the storage device in which it is installed, is slightly different. Which many of us know as a hard disk. With the advancement of technology, the use of hard disk for operating system install or data storage has started to decrease. So which device is currently gaining popularity? Today we will know it and much more with it and get acquainted with some new types of devices.

Many think of this device as an input-output device. In fact, these are not input and output devices. Although they support input-output, they do not function as input and output devices. Data is stored inside a storage device with the help of input-output devices. This device is a medium used to store, transmit, or transmit data.

A storage device is the core of any computing device. In which all data is stored temporarily or permanently. An application is run or exchanged with the help of a storage device. All types of storage devices are used in data processing, but the operating system is installed only within a specific storage device. Each of the different storage devices has different functions. One cannot do the other. Specific storage devices are used for specific purposes.


Types of Storage Devices

Storage devices on all computer systems are generally of two types:

1. Primary storage device

The primary storage device is the device on which data is stored temporarily inside a computing device. These devices are designed to store data for a short period. It is used for data processing. They are much faster but slower in volume. These devices can transfer data and read, write at the fastest speeds. Its main task is to help all kinds of computing devices run applications. It also helps to complete processing by collecting data from the original storage device. Cache memory and RAM are primarily primary storage devices.

2. Secondary storage device

These are data storage devices permanently. Their capacity is much higher and less expensive. Data is stored on these devices with the help of primary storage devices. Much slower than primary storage devices. They can be used as external or internal devices, and all types of applications and operating systems are installed in secondary storage devices. Upon power-on, the primary storage device sends the required boot file from the secondary storage device (hard disk) to the processor for processing, and completes the processing and starts the computer system. It combines the two types of storage devices to complete all the functions of a computer system. USB devices, hard disks, optical drive disks are secondary storage devices.
Secondary storage devices are of three types depending on the shape, speed and type of use,
  1. Magnetic storage device
  2. Optical storage device
  3. Flash memory device


1. Magnetic storage device

These are the most popular and familiar devices. They have a much higher capacity but are relatively slow. Some of these devices have already gone extinct. The hard disk thing we all know is a magnetic storage device. Much cheaper at the price for which the popularity is getting higher. This technology is most commonly used on hard disk drives and hybrid hard disk drives.

2. Optical storage device

Another device we all know is an optical storage device, such as a CD or DVD. Optical storage devices read and write data using laser light. Yet they are much easier and cheaper.

This is a new technology device. Many of us are familiar with and use it. They are much higher speed and more expensive than magnetic and optical devices. But their use is much more convenient as their popularity has increased. Over time, its price has slowly started to decrease. Magnetic and optical devices have almost stopped using them. Because of the high cost of some flash storage devices, many computer users do not use them until now. Such as solid-state drives or SSDs.

We have come to know of another type of storage medium for the maximum use of technology and the availability of the Internet. That is, online and cloud storage. We are familiar with storing data within a storage device inside a computer. But now we can store the data we need inside the online storage device using the Internet, and access that data from any part of the world at any time by using the Internet. The system says. Such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Mega Cloud etc.

Cloud storage is more expensive than all other storage devices. Some cloud storage system companies offer free storage space for a small amount of storage capacity to use their drive systems. If we want to use more storage than they have to pay a lot more.

What is SSD and NVMe SSD?

As I said at the beginning, today we will be familiar with the new device. Many of us know about SSD and NVMe SSD. This part is for those who don't know.
NVMe-SSD
As I mentioned earlier, this device is of the same type. One of which is a flash memory device. SSD and NVMe SSD are flash memory devices. It does not have a rotating disk like a hard disk drive. Instead of a disk, it contains the NAND flash memory chip. And this chip is controlled by a memory chip controller. Data is stored by the controller within the memory chip. SSD's data read and write capabilities depend on the controller's capabilities.

The data read-write method on the hard disk drive is not the same as SSD. The hard disk data read is done by an electrical motor driven arm within the disk rotating inside the hard disk. This arm is called the Actuator. Data is magnetically stored by the actuator. On the other hand, data is stored in the memory chip created by the silicon on the SSD. Which is naturally much faster than a hard disk moving mechanical disk.

SSD data storage speeds are a few times higher than a normal hard disk. A typical hard disk can store data at 70-90Mbps per second. And a simple SSD can be faster than 500Mbps. This speed is much more important for everyday work. Such speed increases the benefits of working on our computer and saves a lot of time.

So far we've known about SSD. Now we will know about the SSD type. SSDs are of two types. One is Volatile and another one is Non-Volatile. SSDs have different means of connecting to computer systems. One of these is SATA and the other is PCIe.
PCIe dependent SSDs are much more dynamic than SATA connection dependent SSDs. It is several times faster than an ordinary SSD. Ranges from 2Gbps to 3.5Gbps. The memory used inside it is different from the chip and general SSD. One of the most well-known SSDs in PCIe dependent SSDs is NVMe or non-volatile memory express.
